You should backup the library before starting a lot of jobs and leaving your system unattended.

If all the conversions are to the same target format, you could remove all the target format files before starting the conversion jobs; then if something goes wrong you would be you would be in this situation

IMO this is superior to the Modified time stamp method, which I think refers to the time the book row in database was changed. This won't be the same as the modified timestamp on the output file (or the opf file). Such inconsistencies can be disconcerting when one is in a post crash recovery scenario, whereas the presence of absence of the output format is much more clear cut.
