ePub: embedded TrueType (TTF) vs OpenType (OTF)

Experimenting with an epub on my new Nook STG I've noticed something rather odd. An embedded TTF displays quite poorly at sizes medium and below. The other font I was testing in this epub was an OTF, so I experimented with converting the TTF to OTF and the problem went away.

Does anyone know if the Nook has problems with TTF in general or is there something unusual about this font in particular?

The thickness of strokes in the letters is very inconsistent and at small sizes it only retains the basic line of the letters, not the shape.
