Like others here, I have been backing up books and photos for a long time. Unlike most, I still have a couple of 8" backups. Been a long time since I could read them!
I just copy everything onto a DVD. The blanks are cheap and they've proven to be quite reliable. Being of a somewhat paranoid nature and distrustful of anything digital, I usually create par2 (parity error correction) files as well. Usually about 10%. For the files I really want to keep, mostly photos (I have negatives that go back more than 50 years now) I also use DVDDisaster to create ecc files. The par2 files will fix files if there is an error reading the file. The ecc files help if there is an error in the directory area of the disc. I don't expect any digital media to last as long as my oldest negatives.
I usually send a duplicate of the disc to my brother as a second backup. Blanks are cheap, most computers with optical drives are DVD writers now and it doesn't take long to do. Cheap insurance against loss.
