For me it's not about the apps. It's being able to (hopefully) play nearly anything from a Chrome browser tab. The things not available to me on my Roku or Boxee Box, like web only content from Hulu, would be played from my browser without an HDMI cable.
I have a work around for my living room (wifi HDMI) but the desktop in my office/guest bedroom does not have HDMI at all. The Chromecast could solve that problem.
It would be great for my brother's home in Costa Rica. He could stream from his iPhone/iPad, I can use my laptop or Nexus 7 or rooted Kindle HD (all through a US VPN). People renting the house for vacations would also be able to use it.
Mine have already shipped! And I just received an email with my Netflix gift codes.
