At a wild guess, I'd have to say your database got corrupted. If it happens again, you can try signing out of your Kobo account and then signing back in so you don't lose any firmware updates or sideloaded content. Sadly, a factory reset is often the quickest way to fix issues -- kinda like saying, just hit him in the head with an axe and he'll be okay.

If you use Calibre, DavidFor's KoboUtilities has an option to verify the database. It won't fix it but does let you know it's munged.
