We use a $3-4 mini art easel from JoAnne Fabrics-- they're wonderful. Adjustable, foldable, easily moved around, etc. It also supports the iPad (big guy with heavy case) in both landscape and portrait. Now, it's not as sturdy as some stands, but at $3, it's well worth a try.

The one caveat with any stand is that if the lower edge of your i-device (or any device) is exposed, the stand can scratch that edge. Even the polycarbonate, mini-easels can do that. However, it's easy enough to prevent with a piece of electrical tape.
