As for the state of your device, you mentioned linkss, there should be an info.txt file in there with the version number.
Checking if you have a linkjail folder is a good step to id the jailbreak, too, but if you really haven't touched it since 2010, yeah, you'll have to uninstall & then update the jailbreak.
