I've encountered a freeze maybe twice in the year and a half I've owned the device. I've never had it get slow on me. However, I'm not a huge library on the device guy; I have dozens of books on my reader, not hundreds or thousands.
As for maps... it could work. Doubt it would be ideal, but it would be very much an individual assessment. If possible, put some maps on a sd card and try it out on an Aura.
