Yes, "I sat" is active, but so is "I was sitting." Tense is not what determines active or passive voice. It's active voice when the subject (here,
I) is performing the action.
Passive voice would be: "The chair was sat on by me."
Chair is the subject of the sentence, but
chair is not performing the action.
