On a tablet you are supposed to install yourself your favorite reading software. Although Sony probably would provide its reader pre-installed.
Rooting T2 is a very simple process (similar to firmware update, really) and it converts T2 into an android tablet (and also improves the native Sony reading software).
So I really don't see much difference between converting T2 into an android tablet or buying an android tablet.
The lack of official support from Sony for a self-made tablet - that might be the difference important to some people.

I don't want to read books on a tablet. I would think an eink tablet that worked as well as an LCD/LED table would be nice for the battery life, but not holding my breath.
And yes I know rooting T2 is a simple process. Most 12 year olds could probably do it if they can read and follow instructions. Not really a major accomplishment to brag on and on about IMO. Perhaps it is for you?.
And I have an android tablet and an HP tablet with dual boot to android. No big deal. Like yourself I have a desktop, and a few laptops, and numerous other gadgets and devices. I have gone to trying to buy only wireless accessories because I had too may power bars and USB hubs attached to and surrounding my desktop. I like gadgets and devices and spend far more on them than I should.
And why on earth would anyone expect Sony to support a self made tablet? They hardly support their ereaders although they do better than some. AFAIK no one supports a rooted device, which I assume you were referring to.
I don't expect my ereaders to do everything a tablet does and more but would be okay if they did. If they would get together and make the bed and cook me breakfast that would be even nicer.
