Filenames on Nook Simple Touch oddly mangled

I am trying to send files to a Nook Simple Touch from Calibre, and have been struggling to get the file renaming facility to work consistently. For some reason the Nook ST is recognised by Calibre (OS/X) as a NOOK_COLOR. The only way I seem to be able to influence the file name on transfer is by changing the pattern in the NOOK_COLOR plugin. But then the series name is truncated, but not always to the same length, and sometimes the series_number is there and sometimes not. Likewise with the title.

Is there something else affecting the behaviour of the plugin? Or is this something the Nook itself is doing?
