From what I have been told, the books are not a series in the traditional sense. They have no overlapping characters (or at least there are no characters from the first two books in the third one). They all just involve heroes who are cops.

I usually read series in order as well, but heard book two was bad and really had no interest in book one. FWIW, I've only read book three and it read fine as a stand-alone.
