E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776 – 1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror novels, many of which were adapted for stage and screen.
The Devil's Elixir is a dark Gothic novel, inspired by Matthew Gregory Lewis's novel
The Monk. It details the adventures of Medardus, a young Capuchin monk, whose life goes horribly wrong after drinking an elixir once left by the devil in the cell of Saint Anthony.
