The original poster is looking for an e-ink reader, not a tablet, so the iPad Mini and Kindle Fire aren't usable suggestions.
I get hand pain, too. Have you considered trying an e-ink reader? They're a lot lighter than either the iPad Mini or the Kindle Fire, and they don't heat up at all.
