I'm excited to join this vibrant, knowledgeable, and world-wide community. I first started working with ebooks in 1985, when I worked at a small software startup. Our product included print-to-braille and braille-to-print translation, as well as a mini-grep function. Our customers read their books on electronic braille devices -- initially
only one kind was available, storing data on cassette tape or on their computers with speech output. Our tools facilitated reformatting (at a very low level) so that typesetters tapes, and then word processing files were made accessible.
I'm thrilled that e-books are no longer a "special needs" anything, but a tool for all of us. While I've read many things with my Mac, my first portable reading device was my long-lamented
AlphaSmart Dana. I stepped up to an iPod Touch (3G then 5G) but the 24pt print that's good for my vision results in not very many words per screen.
My Kobo Aura HD arrived yesterday and I'm excited to leap into the dedicated e-reader pond. The fact of this community made the leap possible. Thanks and looking forward.
