If you have a telnet/ssh setup, you can just copy your modified libnickel to /usr/local/Kobo/ and reboot.
Or you can put it into a KoboRoot.tgz, and do a partial update. Factory reset shouldn't be required.
Having a backup option is a good idea, though.
