I would like to do this without doing an ePub to ePub conversion. Is this possible?
Yes.

There are currently two options for this:
  • Use the Modify ePub plugin. This has been an option for a while, and also supports other standard things you might want to do without a conversion.
  • Use the newer 'Polish' option in core Calibre. You may have to configure the Calibre toolbar to add it. This can handle a few formats in addition to ePub but has less functionality than the modify ePub plugin.
