Hmm.. a complete wild guess, but I know that at one point a while back, my email service required that emails be encrypted because it prevented their service from accepting every spoofed email injected into their net.
The whole process amounted to setting a flag in my email client. Never noticed the issue thereafter.
Perhaps you've encountered something similar?
