In my opinion, the first question is sort of a logical error. It assumes you would ever want to turn off the PW light. Battery life is still a week or two of serious reading and the glow is much less disturbing to others than any book light. I can't see wanting to turn off the light. I adjust it up or down in a fairly narrow range depending on ambient light, keeping it barely noticeable as being lit (yet keeping the text sharp).
