Have you tried setting it to do a full refresh on every page? I wonder if the infrequent flash is worse than the frequent flash in that it still comes by surprise. I personally find that to be the case, and set my Paperwhite to refresh on every page as the flash never bothered me on my K3 (which didn't have a 6 page option) and I like a screen free of artifacts.
