Could be. Jeffrey Deaver came to mind when I read the original question, his Kathryn Dance series specifically, since she's a kinesiologist and there's a lot of emphasis on psychology in the books.
The other contemporary author I'd recommend is John Hart, his thrillers have very well fleshed out characters and their motivations are central to the story.
