You call it "Design choice!!" This makes really things look much worse than I expected: with a bug you can hope for a quick solution, but if you are facing a "design choice", it means you will probably be stuck with it for quite a long time...
Will "shoddy implementation", or "design shortcoming" be acceptable to you? Because to qualify this as a "Design choice" seems to me a little overvalued for what we get from Kobo on this particular topic.

I don't think it is a bug, or a design choice or a feature. (my opinion only)
It is possibly a deficiency or an oversight? More likely something that the programmers are unable to accomplish, or a much lower priority task for them than the bells and whistles and online store and order processing. After all it is an ereader reading function, that you would use while reading a book and which seem to be a bit down the todo list.
I think you were right to report it, but don't hold your breath.
