You've looked at the tweak title_series_sorting, but have you taken a look at:
  • save_template_title_series_sorting
  • per_language_title_sort_articles
  • default_language_for_title_sort
  • title_sort_articles

The tweaks in red are concerned with the articles of speech within titles, designating for calibre which words are to be ignored on a per language basis, when sorting. Here is the link to the Tweak's section of the Calibre Manual, these are discussed halfway down the page.

Reset calibre to your correct language (if you haven't already done so).

Then delete the words listed. After that calibre should treat these words normally. Sorting The Lost Symbol under T regardless of the language setting and the fact that it is an article of speech.

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that the Kindle will handle the title as you want. The Kindle's operating system may also have an "ignore articles of speech in titles" - but one which is permanently set and will always override your wishes.

If, after trying the above, you're still having trouble with this issue, you might try in the Calibre/Devices forum or the general (non-calibre) Kindle forum (if their is one) to find out if other Kindle users' books are forced to ignore articles of speech.
