I tried the widows and orphans solution suggested elsewhere but to no avail. Is there some setting in this plugin to get rid of that space?
These are two separate things.

The line between the paragraphs is a result of the formatting use in the book. The styles used for paragraphs probably specify a top and/or bottom margin for the paragraph. To fix this, you need to change these styles to use a top and bottom margin of zero. There are several ways to do this. You can do it during a conversion in calibre or by editing it in Sigil.

The page numbering means that you are using reading a kepub. These books use a different reader application that displays the page number in this way. If you read the epub version of the book, you will just have "PG. x OF y" where "y" is the total number of pages in the book. If these are kepubs you have purchased, you can download the epub version from the Kobo shop. If you are sideloading them, then you are probably using the extended driver and disabling or removing it will revert to standard epubs.
