i think that it depends on the particular reacher book.

i have read three reacher books, and am on my 4th.

the first two imo did not fit what the OP is after. they were full of "superman without the cape" over-sensationalism, and not much cerebration.

the last one and the current one (The Enemy) are different and i agree with usuallee's characterization.
