But now I've just had another problem. It was working ok, so I decided to go on with the screensaver change and rebooted the kindle. Guess what? It has now came back to the system diags screen.

OK -
There is a file that is created by running any of the diagnostics, that is required to exit the diags mode.
Also, you need to remove that ENABLE_DIAGS file from the user storage.
Sorry - don't have one of those devices running in front of me at the moment - so I have to be a bit inexact . . . .
1) Fumble around in the diags menu and sub-menus until you see the "export file system" (or "export usb" or somesuch) -
Select that ;
Plug cable into pc ;
Delete the ENABLE_DIAGS file;
Safely remove and/or eject ;
Remove cable.
2) Once again in the diags menu . . .
Pick one of the "harmless" diagnostics to run (battery report should be safe at all times) ;
Follow the on-screen directions to step through the diagnostic
**NOW** the missing file will have been created and you can use the usual "exit diags" menu path and it will really exit.
99) Use one of our K4 screen saver hacks.
I think there are several for the K4 - check in the forum master index sticky under "K4".
