Not directly, but they can make guesstimations based on the number of "eyeballs" that see their ads... much like television ads do now.

Personally, I don't have a problem of ads inside the book, as long as they are not distracting from the actual reading. As an author, I'd accept ads in my books... especially if it meant I could give the books for free.

Of course, ads on the site are better.
