One thing you can do with amazon, is
return the ebook to them and get a refund: you must do so within 7 days of purchase, see here:

Then you can buy your book from Kobo or most other stores and read it happily on your device (which is a Kobo reader I presume).
As others have said already, Amazon have their own protection on books which means that any book bought on amazon can only be read either on a Kindle or on a computer using the kindle reading application. Other bookshops sell electronic books with a different type of protection which is managed by Adobe and which makes these books readable on many many devices (Kobo and Sony for the largest brands).
As davidfor said, removing the protection is possible and not too hard, but is illegal in most countries, and for this reason is not discussed on Mobileread (although I should add that to my knowledge many people "clean" their legally purchased books to make sure they have a backup).
