Ok once it said "home" at the top, I turned off wifi (got a message asking if I wanted to cancel sync, I said yes). So now, with wifi off, at the top of the screen "downloading" is flashing. So I guess it is doing something. Will report back if it does.

Ok, it just kept flashing downloading. So I turned it off. Turned it back on. Turned wifi back on. Still showed last sync date 5/11/13 (when I bought it). Now it's actually syncing, I saw it download a book. I am not sure what it was doing before, for an hour or two. So maybe I will get an update this time.
