All bookstores' terms of service say silly things - doesn't mean that they have any legal meaning. Nobody's ever been "cut off" for converting their Kindle books to other formats, and nobody's ever likely to be. Amazon are the best English-language bookstore bar none.
But if you want to read French, an ePub device is probably a better choice.
