The fact that it is not working leads me to believe the problem might be in the way the metadata is recorded in calibre. Hopefully someone who has more knowledge with the program will be able to respond soon.
Do you have any books that are downloaded directly from Amazon? If they "sort" properly, then at least you'll know the problem is in calibre vs. in the Kindle itself.

The kindle is jailbroken. I downloaded three books purchased at amazon and I'm having the same issue.
Could it be just bad firmware on the kindle itself?
I'm going to reset the kindle again and only download a few books purchased from Amazon and see what happens.
It is also important to mention that the same library works perfectly with my Kindle keyboard.
