Party lines eventually became adult chat lines advertised during the crappy movies shown on TV in the early AM hours. The ones you'd watch because you couldn't sleep.
The best couldn't sleep watching TV was when my wife and I had an apartment when we first got married. It was hot and humid. We both couldn't sleep so we were watching Batteries Not Included on DVD. I said I was hungry so at about 2am, we ordered a pizza and I walked to the pizza shop and got it. Sitting there together watching the movie and eating pizza. That was fun.
