I taught 7th grade Reading just before moving to Peru.
I can't emphasize enough how important reading (and a Reading course) is to the intellectual development of our young children.
If I could, I'd lobby every school district in the country to supply more money for more reading materials, more computers, along with ebook Readers to add to their learning development.
