So attach your device. On your menu bar (where-ever you put it) there should be something called "KoboUtilities". It has the kobo logo on it. Beside the "button", there is a small arrow (to the right of the button). Click on this. A whole lot of options pop up. One is labelled "Database". Use your mouse to hover over the word Database and you will see two options pop up. One is "Check the device database". Click on this.
As davidfor mentioned, if it says "ok", there is no corruption. If it says anything else, the database IS corrupt....and since you didn't see any improvement with signing out and in again, I believe your only choice is to do a factory reset.
If it says ok, then your problems lie elsewhere.

Also do I need to keep syncing for the moment to kobo as I have lots of other ebooks I just want to read on my kobo first?
Do I need the other plugin I downloaded by mistake?
