My recollection is that there is an option in the settings to default to either azw3 or mobi. It was defaulting to mobi and I switched it to azw3.
Converting to azw3 allows the Kindle file to retain more of the formatting options available for the epub. Azw3 files seem to be a bit larger than the older Kindle files as a result.
I switched to azw3, mainly, because I am an ultra-hip and hyper-modern type of fellow. I eschew all that is old, quaint, and fuddied to the duddy.
