Sony can afford to sell the PS3 at a loss because it's a "closed system", and they make money on the games. The Sony Reader, on the other hand, is not a closed system - people who buy it do not have to buy books from the Sony eBook store, and hence there's no guarantee of any income from a customer after they've bought the Reader.
It's been well publicised what's happened to 9.7" screen production. They are not going to become available until Spring 2009 at the earliest.
