Sure. Why not? Foreigners anren't permitted to own land in Thailand, so we would have to lease the land if we wanted to build. Then, once the house is built, it's fairly common for the land owner to have the lease nullified, leaving the foreigner with a house that can't be used and a lot of money lost...
We could buy a condo, but why bother? We'll both probably be dead in the next 10-15 years anyway, (or less, the way we live,) my son has a hell of a lot more money than I have so leaving it to him isn't doing him any special favors. He's not about to come here to live... Neither my wife nor I care a wit about fancy furniture... A comfortable bed, sofa, two recliner chairs, and a kitchen table suffice, along with a work bench/computer desk for each of us. My socks and underwear are quite happy to live in a plastic storage drawer. They don't need a teak amoire. And I sure as hell am not about to mow the lawn or repair the driveway.... Yes, a nice rental will do us just fine.
And in honor of being in Thailand, we are both drinking Singha beer!
