There are a couple of ways, but, they aren't great.

You can go to the Kobo site and look at your library. In the "I'm Reading" list, selecting the books and press the delete button. This moves them to the trash. They don't get downloaded and can stay in the trash as long as you want.

You can also use the desktop app. It will download the books to its library. Then delete them there. This removes the books from the app and the "I'm Reading" list on the site. If you connect the device, the books won't be sent there and they won't be downloaded during a sync.
