No, it is more likely there was a problem with the book.

Any changes to the metadata using calibre are only written into the database. The metadata in the books are not updated unless you tell it to: by a conversion, using the Modify ePub plugin or using Polish books. Or when calibre sends the book outside the library: during a save to disk or a send to device. So, the page count would not have been written to the book until you sent it to the device.

As the problem was fixed with a conversion, I suspect the cover wasn't defined in the OPF in a way that the extended driver could find and add the property the device needs. If it the driver can't do this, then even if the driver copies the cover, it won't be used. The conversion would have rewritten the OPF and fixed this.
