I'm using Gnome at home so maybe that's why the difference. In compiz when changing big quantities of metadata the cursor stays the same, but the program changes colour to black and white, which indicates it's busy or/and not responding.

When you import a 200+ books, I used multiple books per directory option, I lose screen refresh option it's the same, colour changes to black and white...

When you update metadata with that title that produces a lot of hits, I used "The state of the art" I can't click cancel while it's working. So there's no way to stop fetching data for me. The cursor does change to busy.

If I use metacity then the whole program stops refreshing in every turn, the only difference is that instead of non responsive black and white version you get a window that doesn't refresh at all so you can erase the content with dragging another window over it.

And in examples like "The state of art" meta data when you try to guess meta data from just the title, if the title produces too many hits you have to kill the program or wait for ages. In my case I gave up after 10 minutes and killed it.
