Ooh, good call on Roger Zelazny's Amber series. If you don't want to start a big book-a-thon I'd still recommend his Lord of Light (one of my all-time fav's), Roadmarks, or Jack of Shadows. Lord of Light touches on SF but only in a mostly-hidden lightly-touched way.
