You are correct. The Kindle cannot handle DRM laden Mobipocket eBooks. AZW is a variant of Mobipocket that works only on the Kindle. But once the DRM is removed, they become ordinary Mobipocket eBooks without DRM).

AZW1 is Topaz format and that cannot be broken yet.
