This is the transparent motive to me.
If readers get more stories in a world they enjoy, all the better.
As a writer, not sure if I would go for the terms, though. Since I've never been inspired to write fan-fic—at least since I was 6 or 7 and typed up a really awesome (to a child's mind) team-up of Spider-Man and the Avengers. Of course, I'm dating myself as 30+ years later Spider-Man
is an Avenger. <sigh>
