A "Preview" is a sample of the book that you found in the Kobo shop and downloaded. A "Recommendation" is a book that Kobo decided you might like based on what you have bought from them, what you have looked at in the shop and the books they want to sell you. If you want to see these types of books in the device list, select the options and they will be shown.

And, I just realised, the info is a couple of weeks out of date. The "Show expired books" is now "Show archived books". If you buy books from the Kobo shop, they get downloaded to the device. If you want to free up space, but still have an entry in the library for them, you can archive them. This deletes the file from the device but keeps the info. This option will allow the user to hide or show them as they desire.
