I suggest going to the store to try them. It is difficult to say what will look better because not all monitors are the same even given the same resolution. I would be tempted to go with the higher resolution and dial it down a bit if needed.

As far as Adobe Acrobat, it is going to depend on how the PDF file was created more than the Acrobat program itself. Crappy compression upfront means a crappy PDF viewing experience no matter how good the display you are using is.
