In looking again at the technology to double-check the oil/water, I did come across this presentation from a couple of years back, which says that Liquavista displays could be implemented on flexible backplanes. I don't know if they've actually done this, but I hadn't realised that this could even be an option. It makes me even more optimistic about the longer-term future of the technology.
