You should still have the full range of hardware brightness available if you set the "disengage" gesture to *above 100%*.

eg.
Initially extra dimming is disengaged - you have the full range (0-100%) of hardware dimming control - as it is now.

You slide down - past 0% - to engage extra dimming.

Once extra dimming is engaged sliding finger up gives hardware dimming variation from 0-100% (extra dimming remains engaged):

It is only if you slide up - past 100% - that extra dimming is disengaged.
