I'm pretty sure judges aren't allowed to give verdicts on criminal trials in the US. That has to be done before a jury. Unless it's a plea bargain I guess, but it doesn't sound like the person researched enough to come up with that!
Oh it gets even worse after that.
Spoiler:
It's pretty much after the"court appointed" shotgun wedding all sex (Really long dragged out badly written ones) No real plot. One everyday scene takes place they have sex, rinse and repeat. This goes on for several chapters and then it jumps ahead for four months and you get a summary of how the heroine has become the favorite of the town and the hero and her are growing apart because they are too busy for sex. It's has no real plot whatsoever. Reminds of what happened to the last book in the 50 Shades trilogy. The author just writes whatever is off the top of her head.
Just one more hour left of the book and I'm done.

One of the worse historical I have read and I have read many.
I am so done with this. I really wanted to support the effort of publishing a non regency but it's darn out embarrassing what is being passed off as a historical romance today. Where's the plot? Where's the history? The Characterization? It's just a sexy contemporary in long dresses.

The funny thing is I enjoy the prequel of the series. It's wasn't perfect but it was believable and had a real plot.
