This is a DNF for me. I will finish it but I can't believe the plot no matter how hard I tried and I'm miffed with how the freed slaves are just plot muppets. Handed off to the hero from the previous book to take north. Such a very important part of our history.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. Ruining a reputation in itself would be slander/defamation (a tort) and a criminal charge would be rape, abduction, or criminal seduction.

I'm pretty sure judges aren't allowed to give verdicts on criminal trials in the US. That has to be done before a jury. Unless it's a plea bargain I guess, but it doesn't sound like the person researched enough to come up with that!
