Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I've never had to do the above. I've got a 2005 desktop (AMD Sempron, WinXP, 3GB RAM) that still works pretty great. Even Blu-ray rips and hi-def Flash videos work fine after a GPU upgrade. Heck, I've got a couple of 1st gen Atom machines running Windows 7 that work just fine for office productivity and most web surfing (tends to choke on Flash HD).
